Thanks for pointing this out. Its been a while since I’ve been to alternativeto.net and thought that’s what OP was linking to, even visiting the site I just figured ‘oh they did a redesign since last time I was here’ totally didn’t dawn on me it was a completely difference site.
I know there’s a lot of legal areas open source apps have to stay out of, like the reason none of these open source maps have good points of interest databases is because they can’t just import in what google has, for legal reasons. But I feel like for reviews you should be able to click a checkbox that says ‘show google reviews’ or something for the end user, and just webscrapes it on demand for the business you’re looking at.
Even better, there should be an anonymous torrent or something of both POI databases and reviews that you can import into the apps as an end user. That way the app creators are legally protected ‘our app doesn’t directly give the end user google owned data’ but the end user just searches google finds the db file and imports it. Boom! Win/win
True, I guess not. But piracy was big at that age group because we were kids who didn’t have our own money, so if our parents didn’t buy the games we wanted, people would try to download them instead. So I fell into learning this detail by necesssity instead of out of pure curiosity or desire to learn more about the computer. I wanted to download Neverwinter Nights or whatever game, and fat32 was standing in my way, haha
Haha at some point it did matter to regular folks though. I remember in Junior high when I would try to pirate games or software on Windows, I learned the big difference between fat32 and the new filesystem Microsoft released, NTFS because I couldn’t download files larger than 4GB on fat32.

Seriously, the people who have power to change the outcome of the future seem to either straight not be planning for this future scenario, or are planning for a horribly distopian version of this future scenario.
It didn’t get enough attention or make enough money, so Canonical dropped it. Its still on life support and slowly having some features added by the the open source community under the name ubports, but its slow going (they just updated the entire codebase from Ubuntu 16.04->18.04 and most recently 20.04) and not the best approach in my opinion, as i think every app has to be specifically developed for ubports, unlike postmarketOS where you can install anything in the repo. It also uses halium which is a translation layer for the android kernel that allows rhe Linux side to interact with hardware, since a lot of the drivers to make these phones work, aren’t mainlined.
Also like any project like this, device support is severely lacking (especially in the US).
Though admittedly, I didn’t realize you could get fairphone in the US now, and that it might work on us bands. So ubports on fairphone 5 might be good, dunno.
Design a Linux phone. So sick of google and android. Currently looking at Fairphone 6 in the US as postmarketOS just got initial support, still need cellular, WiFi, camera to be functional, but considering it just came out a few months ago, pretty impressive.
My favorite story about best buy is in the early 2000’s, a family member gifted me a $20 gift card to best buy, which unbeknownst to them, I had stopped shopping at because it got too expensive and I started buying from newegg instead. Anyway, I walk in and am thinking 'well I don’t really need anything big right now, like a full PC, laptop, etc. Maybe I’ll just get a DVD or something."
Even with a $20 gift card, Best buy prices were so marked up, they were either still more expensive, or the same price as other stores. I think other stores were selling DVD’s at like $15 (not new-releases) and best buy was $35. I walked out and never ended up buying anything. I’m shocked they’re still around to be honest.

The Netflix TV show Dark. Holy hell. I missed SO much the first time. If you haven’t seen this show do yourself a favor and watch it, the amount of detail is crazy, and the casting is top notch. Watch it in German with English subtitles though, the English dubbing is really, really horrendous.
I watched idiocracy at home a year or 2 after it came out, and I hated it because i felt like it beat you over the head with the message, like yeah I get it, I don’t need to watch an hour more of this!
…then I rewatched it after our handling of covid and January 6 insurrection… Thought to myself “yep… Thats how the future plays out…”
