  • That’s a really cool idea actually. I never considered that you could use such a crazy low quant to, it sounds like, temporarily “train” it for the task at hand instead of having to use up countless watt hours training the model itself!

That’s how I use these things, too. Not to “help me code”, but as a fancy search engine that can generally nudge me towards a solution I can work out myself.

  • Expertly explained. Thank you! It’s pretty rad what you can get out of a quantized model on home hardware, but I still can’t understand why people are trying to use it for anything resembling productivity.

It sounds like the typical tech industry:

“Look how amazing this is!” (Full power)

“Uh…uh oh, that’s unsustainable. Let’s quietly drop it.” (Way reduced power)

“People are saying it’s not as good, we can offer them LLM+ plus for better accuracy!” (3/4 power with subscription)

  • Reddit definitely used to be! But sadly thanks to reddit, I think we’re seeing the damage from a disappearing internet when a lot of people mass-deleted their posts and it affects technical pages.

How do I fix this really niche technical issue?

Toasters lollypops groundhogs sport icecube I have scrambled all my reddit posts with a script because reddit sucks and Spez sucks.

Thanks! That’s EXACTLY what I needed! I’ve been looking everywhere for this solution. Have a gold, internet stranger sir/madame. I hope anybody else who has this issue comes here first so they don’t spend as long as I did before I saw your post!

    💀

  • I’ve found myself on the “Let me evaluate this as objectively as possible and still I usually end up pretty left of center” camp, and yet I’m definitely not immune to it.

I’ve had a few run-ins, like one where I tried to de-escalate and respectfully critique a thread that was basically (smugly?) a “death to anyone who looks like they might resemble the other team” jihad , and boy, oh boy the hivemind got stirred.

It’s gotten so bad that merely suggesting temperance and moral consideration brands you a filthy both-siding liberal nazi-enabler or something.

I believe a successful resistance includes restraining unhinged extremists that would stab their fellows in the back for not being extreme enough, but some segments of Lemmy won’t hear it.

  • What can I say, I’m also here for the memes. But otherwise…I don’t blame you.

I like knowing what’s going on , especially when corpo news sources try to sweep it under the rug, and sometimes comments can be really insightful, but often the discourse is so tribalistically rage-blinded and the line of acceptable extremes keeps getting pushed to frightening degree.

Even the slightest hint of disagreement with the extent of said extremes, even if you’re on the same “side” of an issue, will get you branded and told to face the wall with the rest of the filth…You know, by the types who most loudly proclaim how much they’re against fascists .

(My guess is mostly it’s angy isolated teens with anonymity and hair-trigger emotions paired with drooping history grades. And I say this as an idealistic anarchist lol. But it still hurts. Words are words.)

I was recently downvoted like crazy and attacked quite viciously for merely suggesting that dehumanizing human beings, even enemies, is a dark path. Even the poster I was responding to was like “That’s messed up, you were respectfully discussing. People are crazy.”

    I’m more careful now.

It’s beginning to remind me of the apocalyptic world of Metro 2033: On one side, Neo-Nazis want to kill you outright. On the other: the Red army wants to conscript comrade you to their frontlines to hurl at their enemies.

…and most people are just caught in the middle trying to survive.

Sorry for the long reply. Let’s stay safe, sane, and keep touching grass. Take good care out there. ❤️

  • Obsidian and Bitwarden self hosted alternative that can be run in docker container.

Well not 100% sure about Docker but Tiddlywiki is pretty easily hosted! It’s got some quirks, but in the end it’s just an HTML file (or slightly more complex if hosted as a website), so it should stay relevant for a long time. I enioy making notebooks with it for various things!

Nextcloud has a pretty decent passwords manager and I think firefox plugins for it. I personally use SyncThing to sync KeePass databases and use the nextcloud passwords app for low-risk things we share, like streaming service passwords. :)

  • 100%! Like with major setups and upgrades now just being throbbing circles and a pulsing blue light with the creepy “We’re doing stuff on your behalf behind this screen.” messaging.

I say computers (and the Internet) are for anybody, but not everybody. Learning to use a tool will always be a requirement of useful tools.

There used to be a time when most people using a computer implicitly understood how files and folders worked, for instance. But now even such a simple abstraction is considered advanced esoteric lost arcana.

I’m deeply saddened by how the tech industry has deliberately pushed understanding backwards so hard in order to foster more obedient consumers.

It’s actually wild to see how many people who were at the very least, young adults during the computer boom of the late 80’s/early 90’s, can’t handle anything without a touch screen and don’t comprehend email.

Ignorance is sold as the future.
