You’re not dumb! Thank you for the heads up!
While I agree that it is a distraction from the real war at large, the class war, I do want to point out that it very much is real, as you have actual people out there who argue about stupid shit like this. Sad, but that’s humans for ya.

No. I actively hate it to be real, but I leave that frustration for future me since my OS is pretty damn reliable and rock solid 90% of the time.
I also learned to do monthly updates instead of weekly because I updated once this year, and every time afterwards I went to update, it would always destroy my display. (Nvidia card user here, I didn’t know I would be moving to Linux so I didn’t know how stupid nvidia can be on Linux lol). It took a literal two or three months of trying to update before it did without any issue whatsoever!
On the upside, I was able to update last month and everything worked fully like it used to. Just weird ass behavior sometimes.

I got a Dell computer that was headed for the dump from someone, installed TrueNAS Scale on it, and it has actually replaced my Synology for everything other than straight up storage. Now the Synology does the storage, and everything else is in TrueNAS. It did take me a few lookups to understand the permissions on TrueNAS, as Synology is much easier to set up in that regard. I like the fine grain permissions controls, sure, but it was definitely not user friendly to a complete noob like Synology was.

This is one of those things where I’m actually okay with AI use. I understand a lot of the FOSS community devs don’t have a lot of time for such matters, so if this gets it at the very least 90% there, I would consider it a win! (human review being a big bonus, of course!) :-]

Thank you for that. I’m sure the people who read it and got a grasp of what they are trying to accomplish greatly appreciate your going out of the way like that. :-]

When it comes to documentation, at least for myself when I’m learning new things, I like to look at it like a recipe book.
The book shouldn’t contain just the ingredients and what the final product looks like. It needs to be more in depth than that. It needs to contain the ingredients that go into it, how much of those ingredients, the time to cook, what consistency to look for, prep time, etc.
There are plenty of people out there who have never cooked before, and a recipe book/instructions on how to cook a favorite dish is the perfect way to share your love of the craft and the dish that you made. Then, with your recipe as a guideline, people could change it to suit their tastes, and so on and so on.
That’s just how I look at it. I wish I could interpret developer instructions and write up a more user friendly documentation for them. I would love to be able to give back to the community in some more meaningful way than just barely knowing what the developer is providing and using it and making a mess of it my first few tries until I learn from my mistakes.
Thank you so much. Your knowledge is valuable to someone like me, at least!
I would assume the only thing I have exposed is Plex, since that’s the only thing I access outside of my home. I got the backups down pat now (through learning the hard way, unfortunately…). I use MFA for everything that offers it. I never use the same password for anything.
Seems like my trepidation for online stuff has helped me some in this case. I will definitely be checking out the w3schools, so thank you so much for providing that link!
All in all, your words have helped me today at the least, so I very much appreciate you taking your time to respond and help educate me. It means more than you will probably ever know. I don’t have tech people in my life, and have never had that. I’m the only one in any group I interact with that has any slight interest in technology. I learn best when it is under someone who knows what they are talking about or at the very least can provide ways to explain things.
Anyway, again, sincerely, thank you!
I’ll be honest, even this is all new to me. I’ve had troubles wrapping my head around certs and ports, so I’ve always just never even tried anything that would make a port available (as far as I am aware…) so your points have at least reached an audience who appreciates the examples you’ve provided.
Feel free to ignore if you don’t have the mental energy or will to, but where could I find a good source for learning this type of stuff without finding out the hard way like some of those poor people on Shodan? You’ve awakened a fear I didn’t even know I had. lol
If I were you, I wouldn’t even let the others flabbergast you!
Thank you so much for providing so much detail in your comments. I have actually learned a thing or two about Jellyfin. I, like you, am wanting to get off Plex ASAP, but haven’t had the time to sit down and go through with it just yet. Thanks to you, I see those Shodan examples you provided, and the fact that their freaking LOGIN shows up is beyond scary to me.
I appreciate what you have shared. Thank you!

It’s called not having anything else to add to a conversation that is going nowhere. It’s not that deep.

Good lord. This is exactly the type of shit I’m making a point about….
Me bringing up a VALID view point of a woman who is in the process of transitioning to a man, is centering a man’s voice…?
That is certainly a take….

See, I feel like everyone isn’t actually paying attention to what I am saying.
What I am saying is that these types of communities, where only one group can participate in actual conversation, IS an echo chamber.
It’s like if there was a misogynistic community, where only the most vile of men would want to be, where they only hear bad things about women and say bad things about women.
I’m almost certain that that would be frowned upon by normal men/women/people.
Andrew Tate is a very well known douchebag who literally operates in and on an echo chamber…
Really, it’s just not a good look and that’s all I really have to say. Sorry if it rubbed you the wrong way (not just you, in general) but I will stand by what I said and this: echo chambers, where only one group can initiate and interact, are kind of ruining the whole reason a lot of us left Reddit.

And you aren’t addressing anything I’ve said either, so I think we’ve come to a stalemate.
Have a good rest of your day!

Well, no. I think you’re just not listening to what I’m saying, and I don’t really have a better way to get it across to you right now.
Have a good rest of your day!

I understand the challenges of that, and the challenges of having a safe space for women (hopefully of all spectrums…), but the way they handle it now is just bad and shouldn’t be encouraged.
If I was a woman transitioning into a man, would I still be welcome? I have the experiences that some women have had, but since I am becoming a man, then does that mean I can only comment in other communities now?
It’s just not a good way to handle things, I’m sorry.

Let’s take your example a little bit further than some plants.
I see a community that only allows asians or white people to comment, and actively deletes any comments with any name that even semi looks like a “black username” or a “latino username”.
Would you not call that out as being, well, an echo chamber?
“sorry, pyre, your comment was deleted as this is a whites only community. :)”
It’s just not a good look, or something I want to see here on an open source platform. :/

Not at all. People’s opinions don’t mean much anyway, hell not even my own!
If you want a safe space on a public forum, then I highly recommend just making it private.
I have literally seen them delete someone’s comment because they ASSUMED the commenter was a man, when they were in the process of transitioning to a women. This led to the person being very confused, and probably feeling like the community wasn’t welcoming to trans people. Being so heavy handed with the way they mod their safe space has probably alienated more people than they welcomed.
I just think it’s a crappy way to handle things, whether it be men or women. If I ever stumble into a mens only community that is as bad as WomensStuff, I will be sure to say the same thing.
Have a good rest of your day!
I think it’s called fast food because it’s delivered to you quickly, not because you’re supposed to shove it down your gullet fast…
